Preparing your business for a credit application

A strong application is mostly preparation. Here is what to have ready so a lender can say yes quickly and with confidence.

Most delays in business lending are not about credit quality — they are about missing information. A well-prepared application lets a lender move at the speed you need, because every question they might ask is already answered in front of them.

The essentials to have ready

  • Recent financial statements and management accounts that reconcile to your bank activity.
  • A clear statement of purpose — exactly what the funding is for and how it helps the business.
  • Up-to-date detail on existing facilities, security and any commitments.
  • A simple view of your operating cycle so the lender can size the facility correctly.

The narrative matters too

Numbers show where a business has been; the narrative explains where it is going. A short, honest account of the plan — and how the facility supports it — gives a credit team the context that turns raw figures into a decision.

Underwriting is pattern-matching against risk. The more coherent your story and your numbers, the faster the pattern resolves into a yes.

Preparation is also the cheapest form of negotiation. A tidy, complete application signals a well-run business — and well-run businesses tend to be offered better terms.
